After a fire disaster, the building or home must be secured.  The property should be inspected with
Central Flood Management  and the fire chief to determine the safe areas and the possibility or timeline for returning to the building or home.  The inspection should also focus on any life threatening situations that are a result of the emergency. In loss prevention, some of these recommendations obviously need to be handled by trained professionals to minimize damages and control losses, however, some items can be handled by maintenance staff or homeowners.

BEFORE entering the area, make sure the power
is off and the natural gas is off.  Assess the need of
protective gear upon entry to the building such as
hard hats, respirators, and other safety gear.
Under no circumstances, do not light a match or
smoke in the affected area and be sure to only
enter with permission from the fire chief.

Upon entry, open the windows for ventilation.
Rub petroleum jelly or other oil on metal surfaces
to inhibit oxidation of the metal surfaces.  Brush
smoke particulate from furnishings and draperies
but do not attempt to wash walls, ceilings, or other
porous surfaces.  Do not use electrical equipment
or appliance until properly inspected.  Dispose of
food and can goods exposed to excessive heat.
Remove and deodorize clothing.

Proper smoke damage cleaning is vital.  Improper cleaning may set smoke and odor permanently. Following these guidelines can control and minimize losses.  The use of a professional restoration company in the early stages of an emergency or a disaster can save you time and money.
Make Central Flood Management part of your loss prevention plan.
